I was the company medic for B Co when we were stationed on top of the hill with the ROK Tigers and then when we moved south to the beach. I think the CO was Cpt. Hitchcock but my memory is pretty well shot. I remember that 'Top' was a large guy with a small mustache but I guess every 'Top' fit that same description. While at the beach I was transferred to the 299th Engr Bn (CBT) up in Dak To. Does anyone know what happened to Larry, the Vietnamese boy that we took in while at the beach.

The three camps I was stationed at were:LZ Uplift at Bong Son,Binh Than, and Miami Beach, south of Qui Nhon. Our mission was to build QL1,converting it from a heavily mined dirt trail to a 55 foot wide paved highway

First of all it should be known that I legally changed my name in 2003, from, George E. Lennon, to Dusty Lennon. I arrived in country 4/11/1966 and stayed with the 84th until they changed the Bn. to the 589th Engr. I don't remember when that happened. I Was a Spec 4 at the time of Operation Duke. Previously I was thinking that I was a PFC. After serving my 12 month tour I extended 6 months and remained in An Khe with B Company.

'I was stationed in B company with the 84th in the Mojave dessert for
about three months and then back to Fort Ord for about about one year plus
when we recieved notice that we were going to Viet Nam in May of 1965 we
left on the Eltinge for our long journey which ended when the poor old girl
broke down just after we had crossed the international date line, from that
time on I never knew whatday it was. I had a great crew to work with at the
B company motor pool,I will never forget all of the friends that I have made
because of the 84th.'

Thought we would have to row the USNS ElTinge but were towed back to Midway Island for a beer party Then we were upgraded to the USNS Barrett!!Three Hots & a hanging Cot -- First class all the way to the beach in Qui Nhon !! From there things got a little rustic and people kept asking 'What am I doing Here?'-- That's what's so Great about this web site --- We finally get to find out why ! Don't be afraid to ask !!

After completing the bridge we worked on a hanger on base. The Battalion was spit-up. B Co. was the last of the 84th to move out of the area, we loaded on LST moved down the cost to Phan Rang and up QL 27 to the base of the DapDa Nhim Dam. From there we worked QL 27. I remember it snow that Jan.

Served under Cpt. Ralph Cordon who was killed and under Cpt. Ron Weitz as 1st LT and platoon leader for second platoon. Fellow LTs were Harry Jones, Al Cikra, Oscar McNeil, and Joe McNeil. Battalion Commander was LTC Melvyn Remus. My platoon sgt for most of my time was SFC Collier. My hoochmate was Jim Sasser, the well driller. My platoon built warehouses at the DaNang deep water pier, guard towers, bunkers and fences in the area. I also was detailed to convoy duty during the Lam Son 719 campaign where we hauled matting for the runway at the airfield at Khe Sahn.

I went by the name of Buck. I worked on the Bong Son Bridge. Worked in rebar yard making concrete slabs for the bridge. And I also drove a 5-ton dump truck and helped build road to Red China Sea. I also went TDY to other units. Then went to Da Nang with the 84th. I did mine sweep with my 5-ton dump truck. I am missing about 4 months of memory of my time in Vietnam. I would like to hear from anyone in the 84th Company B.

B was also located at an abanded marine base,i believe it was the 5th marine. I started out a a mechanic. When the parts clerk rotated the sent me to saigon for a 2 week class on parts. In may I was promoted to sp5. I had a head injury after I etsd, so I can't remember to much. I remember Capt. Cordon being killed by the mine, and Capt Weitz taking command. Also the typhoon at Fire Base Bauldy. I guess its better that I don't remember some of it. G Is keep your heads up. We were just as much heros as the ones they call heros now.
