Along with my Army buddy played football on the 84th Engineer Battalion team at Fort Ord so we could get out of KP duty. We didn't win a game. I only had 9 months left so I figured it was safe to drive out my car back to Ft Ord after leave home. Put our GI camp gear to good use & enjoy a bit of what CA had to offer, Big Sur, many beatiful state parks, maybe even a national park or two. Got in very late Sun night. At revalie the very next morning they announced we were be marched over after breakfast to the auditorium for a convocation. There they announced we were headed for overseas. Needless to say, I was disappointed & had to turn right around & drive my 62 black Ford ex-patrol car right back home in NE. Took along fellow surveyor along the way who was from Kemmerer, WY staying overnight with his family there. I have a few picture's on Midway Island where we drink all the beer they had on the island. At least this is the story we got. Saw gooney bird's (a rare bird where  Midway Island is 1 of 2 places wh

Shipped to Viet Nam with the battalion in June of 1965 from Fort Ord. At Qui Nhon until Dec 1965 when I was injured and sent to Okinowa. Discharged May 1966 from Presidio at San Francisco.

I was assigned too HHC for a short time(weeks?)while we were pouring concrete pads for the hootches and building the (cclub?) hospital. I transferred to C Company where I was an 830M operator until we moved out to the ammo dump. I was then converted from SP5 to SGT and was a heavy equipment squad leader. I stayed in and retired in April 1978 and now live near Birmingham, Alabama. Agent Orange caught up to me and I had surgery for lung cancer in Nov. 2009. doing OK.
